Notice of the Monday, February 13, 2023, Board of Education Regular Meeting was published at the entrance to the school, the Banner County Court House, the Harrisburg Post Office, Banner Capital Bank, the school website, and in the Western Nebraska Observer.

Call to Order

The regular February meeting of the Banner County School District Board of Education was called to order at 7:31 PM in the School Cafeteria, 200 School Street, Harrisburg, Nebraska. The Nebraska Open Meetings Act was posted on the wall.

 

New Members Oath of Office

Douglas Olsen and Bret Jeffries were re-elected as Banner County School Board Members for a four-year term beginning January 2023 and ending December 2026. Douglas Olsen and Bret Jeffries took the Oath of Office.

 

Roll Call/Welcome

Present: Megan Allen, Laura Baker, Bret Jeffries, Ronald Johnson, Jake Knaub, and Douglas Olsen. Also present: Evelyn Browne, Superintendent/BOE Secretary and Principal Charles Jones.

 

Pledge of Allegiance

President Ron Johnson invited members and guests to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance.

Approval of Agenda

Approve agenda for the February 13th, 2023 Banner County Regular Board of Education meeting. Passed with a motion by Douglas Olsen and a second by Laura Baker.

FFA Greenhouse Project

FFA students Andie West and Wyatt Reichenberg reported on the progress toward the goals of the Greenhouse Project

Awards and Recognitions

President Ron Johnson commended the following students, staff, and patrons:

FFA Teams going to State on March 29th:Welding Team - 2nd at Districts (Scottsbluff) - Jacob Parsons, Adam Knaub, Brendyn Onstott, Wyatt Reichenberg

Livestock Management Team - 5th at Districts (Scottsbluff) - Isaac Olsen, Logan Mason, Andie West, Marie Hein, Micah Dittbenner

Ag Mechanics Team - 3rd at Districts (Gordon) - Adam Knaub, Wyatt Reichenberg, Jacob Parsons, and Nathan Clement

Grace Fankhauser and Adia Thomson are now Certified Nurse Assistants. Adia got the highest grade on the written test the tester had ever seen.

 

Music students selected for honor bands and choir: 

Oregon Trails Honor Band on January 9th: Marissa Fankhauser (12), Grace Fankhauser (11), Wyatt Onstott (12), Travis Onstott (12); and Isaac Olsen (10).

2023 Underclassmen Honor Band, at Kearney High School on January 16th: Isaac Olsen (10) and Logan Mason (9).51st High Plains Band and Choir Honor at Chadron State February 6 & 7: Wyatt Onstott (12), Isaac Olsen (10), Travis Onstott (12), and Keira Bolander (10).

All-State Class D Band: Isaac Olsen, Wyatt Onstott, Grace Fankhauser, and Jaelynn Yetter were selected for All-State Class D Band in Kearney on March 17 & 18.

1st grade teacher Kassandra Rossi wishes to recognize Rhett Lapaseotes, a kindergartner, who tested into the 1st-grade reading program. Rhett will be at a 2nd-grade reading level by the end of the year!

Wyatt Reichenberg earned 1st place in the Conference Wrestling competition at Bridgeport and 2nd Place at Districts in Southerland. He goes to State Wrestling Competition in Kearney on Feb 15th.

Chadron Speech Meet, Feb. 4: Abigayle Jones- 5th for humorous; Abigayle Jones & Janie Fonseca- Warm - 4th for their duet; Conrad Kaminski - 3rd for humorous; Jaelyn Yetter- 5th in serious; Janie Fonseca-Warm - 5th in humorous, Karleigh Leslie & Amanda Montelongo - 3rd in duet; Makayla Enriquez - 5th in serious

Gordon Speech meet, Feb 11: Isaac Olsen - 3rd Informative; Conrad Kaminski - 6th in Humorous

 

Spelling Bee Winners: Shawnie Mason (7) 1st place and Leeigh McGowan (8) 2nd place.

-Cats Committed donated $654 to the Festival of Hope to support cancer patients and their families from their "Spike Out Cancer" Night on October 14.

Personnel

-Mr. Charles Jones tendered his letter of resignation. He is thanked for his service to our students as principal ad coach over the last 7 years.

-Mrs. Nancy Olsen tendered her letter of resignation due to retirement. She is thanked for her service to our students as teacher, class sponsor, MathCounts coach, NHS sponsor, and Website administrator over the last 15 years.

-Mrs. Marie Parker tendered her letter of resignation due to retirement. She is thanked for her service to our students as school nurse and bus driver for the past 27 years.

-Mrs. Cynthia Brown tendered her letter of resignation. She is thanked for her service to our students as 7-12 Science teacher this year.

-David Hellman tendered his letter of resignation. He is thanked for his service as Network Administrator and computer tech classes.

-Cindy Jean Stover has resigned as part-time evening custodian.

 

Principal

  1. On January 10 there were dental exams and sealants for PK-1st Grade.
  2. On January 11, FFA students went to a District Contest in Scottsbluff.
  3. Mrs. Gifford and I attended the NSAA District VI Meeting in Alliance.
  4. One Act had an all-school performance on January 12.
  5. Mrs. Wounded Arrow took students to the Kearney Honor Band on January 15-16.
  6. MAC Choral Clinic was held on Monday, January 23.
  7. The Spelling Bee was held on Thursday, January 26.
  8. FFA Students had a District Contest at Gordon on February 1.
  9. There was a rep from WNCC to talk to Juniors and Seniors on February 2.
  10. Cats Committed sponsored a Neon Night on February 3. The boys’ basketball team held a mini-camp and the girls’ team helped students create signs and worked on cheers. Mrs.

    Gifford and Mrs. Boettcher organized OEF sessions to have students create their shirts. There were 56 students in grades K-8 that participated.

  11. Mrs. Wounded Arrow took students to High Plains Honor Band in Chadron on Feb. 6-7.
  12. Mrs. Olsen took a student to the MathCounts Competition at Scottsbluff on February 8.
  13. The JH Girls placed 3rd in the MAC Junior High Tournament held on February 9 and 11.
  14. High School Winter Sports are winding down. Wyatt Reichenberg has qualified for State Wrestling, placing 2nd at Districts. State Wrestling is in Omaha on February 16-18. Girls' Sub Districts are tomorrow and boys' Sub Districts are next week.

All members need to complete the Board self-evaluation before the Saturday retreat.
