Welcome to BCS Curriculum

The curriculum is a specific plan - or blueprint - that identifies lessons, activities, and assessments that will be taught in a classroom. Our curricula are presented in the form of Curriculum Maps. A curriculum map is a visual representation of the content knowledge and skills that students learn in a specific subject on a monthly basis. By sharing our curriculum with students, parents, and the broader community via our web-site, we seek to strengthen communication channels and develop partnerships that support student learning and achievement.

The Nebraska Department of Education has developed content area standards for reading, writing, mathematics, science, social studies, fine arts, physical education, and world languages, as well as course-based standards for Career and Technical Education. Curriculum Maps present information on the instructional activities, materials, and resources that support student learning, arranged chronologically throughout the school year. In the "Skills" column, what students will learn and how they demonstrate their learning, are aligned to the NE Content Standards.

Our Curriculum Maps are the result of teacher collaboration and reflection, and provide a flexible approach to instructional planning while meeting the educational needs of our students.  The capacity to update and revise our maps annually gives us a broader scope for creativity and opportunities to apply our own learning to our classroom practice.

The intention of maintaining a “living curriculum” creates opportunities for teachers to seize “teachable moments” and respond to events or opportunities that take place in the real world. Accordingly, the chronological identification of skills and knowledge acquisition as presented in the curriculum maps may not always occur in the month specified. Additional materials and resources that enhance instructional activities may dictate the timing and presentation of course content. The month-by-month curriculum guide may be adjusted by the classroom teacher depending on access to materials and in response to real-world events.
