Notice of the Monday, August 8, 2022, Board of Education Regular Meeting was published at the entrance to the school, the Banner County Court House, the Harrisburg Post Office, Banner Capital Bank, the school website, and the Western Nebraska Observer.


Call to Order

The Regular Meeting of the Banner County School District Board of Education was called to order at 7:03PM, in the school cafeteria. The Nebraska Open Meetings Act was displayed on the wall.


Roll Call/Welcome

Present: Megan Allen, Laura Baker, Ronald Johnson, Jake Knaub, and Douglas Olsen.
Also present: Evelyn Browne, Superintendent/BOE Secretary and Principal Charles Jones.
Motion to excuse Bret Jeffries. Passed with a motion by Laura Baker and a second by Jake Knaub.

President Ron Johnson invited members and guests to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance.


Approval of Agenda

Approve the agenda for the August 8th, 2022 Regular Meeting of the Banner County Board of Education. Passed with a motion by Douglas Olsen and a second by Laura Baker.

Awards and Recognitions

President Ron Johnson commended the following staff:
-Thank you to all of the summer custodial staff for getting the building & grounds & buses ready for 22-23 school year: Tod Wenger, Mike Johnson, Rick Caudillo, Sue Talkington, Kelly Rundell, Janette Miller, & Genny Milner. -Students and staff who helped with the multi-sports youth camps July 18-22: Wittni Boettcher, Brandon Avila, Brittney Serres, Jacob Parsons, Isaac Olsen, Riley Jones, Abigayle Jones, MaKayla Enriquez.

Facilities & Transportation 

  • July Facilities Report (attached) 
  • Tractor needed! Extensive repairs (exceeding $10k) needed on the circa 1960 model. Prices in the Scottsbluff area $20-30k depending on size.

Personnel 

  • Janette Miller (custodian) resigned effective 8/4/2022 
  • Ads posted in Harrisburg, our web-site, and in the Western Nebraska Observer for full-time custodian and bus drivers. Ads will be posted in the August Scratching Post. 
  • I attended the School Safety Academy July 18-22

Principal

  1.  I have been on calls with Amplify Science to set up the middle school program.
  2.  We held a multi-sports camp for grades 3-8 the week of July 18. We had 13 kids attend for volleyball, football, and basketball.
  3.  I attended Administrator Days on July 26-29.
  4.  Today was the first day of high school fall practice. Eight students turned out for football, 10 for volleyball, and 1 for cross country.
  5.  We are scheduling practices around county fair this week to try to accommodate as many kids as possible.
  6.  New teacher orientation will be on August 15.
  7.  Teacher Inservice and Work Days are August 16-17.
  8.  Open House will be August 16 from 5:30-7:00.
  9.  First Day of School for K-12 will be Thursday August 18.
  10.  First Day for Preschool will be Wednesday August 24.

Board of Education

The date for the Budget Workshop was set for Sept 1 at 6:00PM in the School Library. Dr. Johnson, Jake Knaub, and Dr. Browne will attend the NASB Area Workshop at the Gering Civic Center on August 29th. Members can contact Dr. Browne prior to Aug. 24th to register or cancel.

  • Designate Banner Capital Bank as Depository for District Funds
  • Designate Western Nebraska Observer as District's Legal Newspaper

Transportation and Grounds: No report. Brief all board discussion on AMERESCO contract for the Energy Services Agreement.
American Civics, Curriculum, and Technology: No report.

Approval to proceed to secure a replacement tractor through a non-public letting process.

Allow the superintendent of schools to proceed to secure a school tractor through a non-public letting process. Passed with a motion by Douglas Olsen and a second by Jake Knaub.
