Notice of the Monday, January 9, 2023, Board of Education Regular Meeting was published at the entrance to the school, the Banner County Court House, the Harrisburg Post Office, Banner Capital Bank, the school website, and in the Western Nebraska Observer.

Call to Order

The regular January meeting of the Banner County School District Board of Education was called to order at 7:01PM in the School Cafeteria, 200 School Street, Harrisburg, Nebraska.

The Nebraska Open Meetings Act is posted on the wall.

 

New Members Oath of Office

Ron Johnson, Douglas Olsen, and Bret Jeffries were re-elected as Banner County School Board Members for a four-year term beginning January 2023 and ending December 2026. Ron Johnson was present and took the Oath of Office.

 

Roll Call/Welcome

Present: Megan Allen, Laura Baker, Ronald Johnson, and Jake Knaub.

Also present: Evelyn Browne, Superintendent/BOE Secretary and Principal Charles Jones.

Motion to excuse BOE members Douglas Olsen and Bret Jeffries from the January 9th, 2023 regular meeting of the Banner County BOE Passed with a motion by Jake Knaub and a second by Laura Baker.

President Ron Johnson invited members and guests to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance.

Approval of Agenda

Student of the Month Certificates were presented to Trace Olsen, Grade 3, and Riata Peterson, Grade 1.

Awards and Recognitions

President Johnson commended the following students, staff, and patrons:

-Students who performed for the Christmas Concert on Dec. 19th under the direction of Mrs. Wounded Arrow.

-6th-grade Entrepreneurs who developed products for the Extravaganza on Dec. 19th under the mentorship of Mrs. Gifford

 

Annual Reorganization of BOE

Election of Board Officers

-Nominate Ron Johnson for board president. Passed with a motion by Jake Knaub and a second by Laura Baker.

Authorization to Sign Checks

Dr. Browne presented information on proposed amendments to the ESSER III grant to board members and patrons for comment.

-Foundation Winter Clothing drive took place in December

-Great attendance for Christmas Concert and Entrepreneur Extravaganza

-Mat Cats wrestling in full swing

Facilities & Transportation

  • Bus 4 converted to 14-passenger - assigned to the Kimball route
  • Still looking for tractor replacement (Purchase approved at the 8/8/22 BOE meeting)
  • Damage to High School wing during snow removal submitted to ALICAP
  • Frozen water pipes, burst boiler thermostat, cracked faucets in residences - all due to extreme cold on Dec 22-23

  • Driver Education starts Jan 13th.

Personnel

-Many thanks to Larry Pahl for helping us out for the 1st semester. Larry will continue as a substitute bus driver

-Shout out to Tod Wenger for handling middle of the night plumbing emergencies

-Shout out to Martin Olsen for helping with the blizzard snow removal

Principal

  1. The 6th Grade Entrepreneur Extravaganza was held on December 20.
  2. The PK-12 Christmas Concert was held on December 20.
  3. There are 19 students in grades 6-12 who have made the Honor Roll for the 1st Semester. 3 Students on the High Honor Roll and 16 on the A-B Honor Roll. There were another 10 students who missed the Honor Roll by one class.

Board of Education

The date for the Winter Retreat was set for Feb 18th, 2023 at 8:00am in the School Library. Members were requested to send agenda items to Dr. Browne and complete the Board Self- Evaluation on-line prior to Feb. 18th. Dr. Browne will email the survey link to board members.

Committee Reports

Transportation and Grounds: No report.

American Civics, Curriculum, and Technology: No report.

Policy Review: No report. Two policies o the agenda for review.

Personnel and Negotiations: Final negotiations meeting took place on Dec. 12th with tentative agreement.

Approve Negotiated Agreement for 2023-2024 and 2024-2025

Approve the Negotiated Agreement for 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 with the Banner County Education Association as presented. Passed with a motion by Ronald Johnson and a second by Jake Knaub.
